Recurrent Corneal Erosion – How it destroyed my life and How I cured it

I am posting this in the hope that it will be of use to others who suffer from this horrific condition.

Background:
In June 2009, I woke up with my first RCE episode in my left eye (pain was about a 5, on a scale of 1-10).  The doctor said it was caused by a foreign object.  A few days later, still in pain, another doctor scraped the surface of my eye and it healed within a few days.

A month later, there was another abrasion.  The doctor put a bandage lens in.  I told him that contact lenses tended to bother me and he said I could remove it myself if I had any discomfort.  A few days later, my eye was irritated, and I removed the lens as he’d instructed…. along with the entire surface of my cornea.  It sent me to the ground screaming a cry of death and nearly blacking out.  There are NO WORDS to describe the physical and emotional trauma of this experience.  (on a  pain scale of 1-10, this was 50).  The ER sent me to a corneal specialist who did the stromal puncture.  I spent the next 5 days on vicoden, in bed, waiting for the eye to heal, periodically shrieking and unable to tolerate sunlight, TV, or the computer screen.

The doctor finally explained to me that I had RCE and I began a nightly regimen of Muro 128, keeping the eye lubricated with drops.  I taught myself to never touch my eye and slept with a humidifier.

For a year, I lived in a nightmare called “Recurrent Corneal Erosion.”  As bad as the erosions were in my eye, the erosion to my quality life was equally terrible.  The abrasions occurred every 2-6 weeks in my left eye, usually on a pain scale of 3-4, but sometimes as bad as an 8-9. I had the Stromal Puncture repeatedly, missed countless days of work and social engagements, and had to give up activities I loved like surfing.  Everything revolved around the RCE beast.  Just when I thought things were as bad as they could be, I started getting them in my Right eye too!  I asked the corneal specialist how this could be, since I thought the tear in my left eye was caused by an arbitrary foreign object?  “You were probably just born this way”, he told me and then recommended the PTK surgery.  I was hesitant, as I’d read several online posts from others who’d said the surgery had made their RCE worse!  A 2nd specialist confirmed there was little risk, but I was still hesitant.

With all the people out there suffering from this and getting few good answers from their doctors, I felt I needed to try something else before risking another surgery to my poor eyes.

Hope:
Since the waiting time for a PTK surgery appointment was many months anyway, I made an appointment with Mark Mincolla, a nutritional health therapist recommended by a family member.  He met with me and I explained the condition which he’d seen and treated before.  He explained that many of our health problems are caused by infectious build-up from the foods we ate.  Things like bacteria and yeast would build up and degrade our organs and cause problems, such as what I was experiencing.   He proceeded to ‘muscle test’ me (see below for a link explaining this).  He then gave me a list of foods I needed to remove from my diet (including dairy, sugar, moldy vegetables like mushrooms, vinegar, wheat, and most nuts).   He said he felt that the problem was caused by a build-up of yeast and bacteria in the sinuses behind my eyes.  Removing these foods would stop the continuation of the infectious build-up.

He had me take natural supplements 3x daily (Kold Kare, Monolauren, and Colloidal Silver drops in my eyes), which are necessary to knock out the build-up already in there (just eliminating the foods wouldn’t be enough).  In addition, he muscle tested me on the ointments and drops I had been using and found that both Muro 128 drops and ointment were not good for me.  Instead, he had me start using “can-c” eye drops to lubricate my eyes.

He was asking a lot of me, but I was DESPERATE to stop the sensation of razor blades in my eyes and willing to try this before risking surgery.  I followed his instructions from that day onward, only cheating on the diet occasionally and discontinued the use of Muro 128.  The first month, I had some soreness in the sides of my eyeballs (not where the abrasions are).  Mark told me that yeast doesn’t die quietly and that this was probably a symptom of them clearing out.

Since then, I have not had a single bad abrasion (a few that are a 1 on the pain scale, but nothing unmanageable).  I was skeptical, but after 4.5 months of 99% relief, I truly feel like I have woken up from a nightmare.    The food sacrifices are minimal compared to what I’ve gained back (my life)…and they are not permanent.  In time, I will be able to integrate some foods back in moderation.   If you want more information about the methods I used to heal my eyes, below are some links to check out.

I wish healing to all.

  1. this is super helpful my wife struggle with this for the past 3-6 months or so it just started randomly. We thought it might be linked some how to her birth control the copper IUD. We've had it removed for a 1 month now and the corneal stuff hasn't stopped. The doctor tried to tell us that is copper iud wasn't related but I think our body is a system and one thing out of balance can throw the whole thing off. For example you changing your eating and other things you had to do to offset it. When did it start?

  2. Well this is my story with recurrent corneal erosions in both eyes, and how I finally took care of it in March of 2012 with hyperbaric oxygen therapy; it's non-invasive and has great other positive side effects.

  3. Interesting to see what has worked. There are no words to describe how painful this condition is. I suffered with it for 3 years and tried everything. You cannot imagine being awoken with the horror that someone has just stabbed you through your eyeball. That is exactly the sensation. Then it just seems to feed upon itself. Once the cornea was injured and tried to repair itself, it made it so much worse. Thus the "recurrent" part of the syndrome.

Contact lenses helped for a while, if I didn't peel off part of the cornea when I removed them. The largest improvement came when I started taking high doses of the supplements Chlorella and spirilena (sp?). Took about 6 to 8 weeks, but have not had an incidence since then. And I would have done anything anyone recommended, burying a chicken in my backyard, anything at all, to make it stop. Hope this helps someone.

    1. Hi Molly,
Thanks for your comment. I'm glad to hear this is working for you. The way I understand this is that our body is designed to naturally heal itself when it breaks down. We just have to give our body the nutrition to do this. When it's full of bacteria, yeast, and mold from our food, we cannot heal our organs. I have been free of corneal erosion for several years now, and I've found I'm able to eat sugar and wheat, etc...in moderation without a problem.

    2. Long shot here, since this is 5 years after the post-date, but I'm getting desperate for hope right now. I've been dealing with this condition for 3 months now, since my daughter severely scratched my cornea during breastfeeding. All I'm getting from eye specialists is very negative outlooks. But it does seem that a lot of people eventually recover from this with time. ..still, the doc's refuse to say that.

I'm wondering how you are doing now? Are you still good and no longer dealing with the RCE? Can you order any advice or hope or anything at all to give this seriously sad mommy a reason to believe that it will get better?

    3. Hi Stacy,

One thing that helped me tremendously (suffered from this for 4 years), was to wear a bandage contact at night to sleep. I would lubricate my eye well before bed and before removing it in the morning. To do this, you'll need the extended wear contacts and you'll need to be extremely careful to not contaminate your eyes with bacteria and cause an infection. It sounds like yours isn't getting a chance to actually heal. If you have a doctor open to that, great. They can give you a prescription. Mine was not, and was not willing to consider it. I ordered mine from Canada (a handy loophole) and it made a significant difference in the frequency of my erosions.

I would also recommend the Autoimmune Paleo Diet alongside the use of the contact. I discovered that my issue was made worse by systemic inflammation. My trigger was actually peppers and pepper-based spices, oddly enough. It wasn't until I got rid of this trigger in my diet that I got better. Now I no longer need to sleep with a contact and haven't had an erosion in a year.

    4. Dear Stacy ... I suffered from RCE for two years on a monthly basis so I decided to teach college part time until I got better. My painful condition became less frequent after the eye doctor advised me to take one fish oil pill, one beta carotene pill, and one Vitamin C pill everyday.

  5. This was very interesting. I have been through many erosions since I was 8. To say the least, as you know it gets to be more than frustrating. 21 yrs so far of battling. I play roller derby, work and have a husband and 2 daughters. So far this year I've missed a total of 2 weeks of work, 2 months of derby and not to mention all my daughters cheer leading games/ school functions. This post made sense, I had my gallbladder removed but I had not watched my diet, never had to but since I don't have my gallbladder to remove the fats and so on, this is the 3 rd erosion since I had it out. Possibly watching what I eat will help. Thank you, it makes complete sense, like clear as day. Good luck to you all, I completely understand!!

  6. I've had mine for 7 years now. Had the antibiotics and the delamination surgery, neither worked. I hydrate and lubricate every night but I'm still getting one erosion a month. Any ideas if the supplements would work on their own? Really don't think I could give up sugar and dairy!

    ReplyDelete
  7. Also, are you taking the supplements continuously or have you stopped after a period of time without erosions returning?

    1. Hi Olly,
So sorry to hear you are struggling with this awful condition. I can understand the difficulty in making changes in your diet. I was scared to give up these things, but I was also desperate enough to give it a shot. I gave up these foods about 90% of the time for a year and took the supplements religiously 3x/day. Since then, I've loosened the reigns and I eat sugar and wheat a few times a week. I still take supplements but only 1x/day. I've found that this worked for me. My eyes have been fine since I started. Maybe try it for just a few months. Being pain free is a huge reward for the temporary sacrifice. Nutrition is the key to healing our bodies. Good luck.

    3. Hi Jojo,
I'm also struggling with RCE at the moment and am still wearing contact lens. This is my 4th very painful episodes and after reading your blog I think that I have the same problem with you. I suffer from sinusitis since young and that may contribute to the yeast buildup in my body. I live in indonesia and after searching for those supplements that you mentioned. I can't seem to find it anywhere in indonesia. Where did you get yours from? Do you need prescriptions for them? Thanks so much for your blog. It really gives me a big relief knowing that there is light at the end of the tunnel. I hope I can fix this problem soon as I am really missing out a lot on my time with my kids because of this condition.
      Thanks again

    5. I've tried purchasing things online but it never gets to me. The post system here is really horrible. Nothing from overseas gets to us. I am going to singapore to see an eye specialist in the beginning of april and will try to find the supplements there. Hopefully they sell them there. I'm also trying to search for a good nutritionist in singapore as well so i can book a consultation. I've given up dairy and sugar for about a week now and will continue to do so. I found chlorella and spirulina as well so have started on those for a week as well. Still not much improvement yet as i'm still getting pain in my eye. I will keep taking them and hope there will be improvement soon. Thank you for your advice. It is great to know that you have been fully cured :)

  8. Thank you so much for sharing this story. I been dealing with this thing since summer of this year. Woke up with the same pain in the left eye today after I went to the doctors to get the eye bandage on 3 weeks ago, which seemed to be doing great, until this morning! I was crying the pain was so horrible. So now I ordered the stuff you mentioned off of amazon, and Im going to also try a thing called the Zapper which I heard even clears candida and yeast! It has 2 pennies on it, a friend of mine tried it for their toothache and she didnt have to get a root canal. So its worth a try along with the diet change, eliminating all sugars. thanx so much for this article.

Ready to go full raw until it goes away, this is the only way to beat it completely. Eat lots of green salads, and green smoothies. Raw honey is safe, it kills candida so use that inplace of sugar http://www.benefits-of-honey.com/honey-and-lemon.html Im so over this pain

  12. Hi there, thanks for all this information. I've gone to 3 optometrists, a couple doctors and a naturopath about my RCE and no one is helpful. I've been using Muro 128 ointment for the last year and a bit and that has helped a lot, but if it's harmful for my eyes that needs to stop (especially as I think my eye with RCE is getting all sorts of other problems starting now). I want to order all these supplements and give this a try, but it's a little unclear as to what exactly the products are that I'm buying. Can you post some links to photos of the products you use or something like that so I can ensure I'm ordering the correct ones (I live in Canada so Amazon.ca is what I have to use and it has so much less than the .com). Thanks for your story, this is really inspiring and also sadistically nice to know I'm not alone.

    2. Johanna, thanks so much for taking the time to post this info and to respond to everyone's comments/questions. I have been off the offending foods for years (except for nuts) but still have issues relating to ears and sinus, as well as RCE (and I'm guessing there's a connection).

I'll try the other supplements you recommend, and will also see if I can get some hyperbaric oxygen treatment, as this has helped several others with RCE.

      Stay well!

    3. Hi Johanna
My husband has had RCE since October 2013. We read your blog at Christmas and he cut out all the yeast / candida foods as you suggested. He has had 2 corneal scrapes to date and is really in need of another as the horrendous pain keeps occurring every 3 or so weeks. He has a corneal plaster in continuously and this too is changed approx. every 3 weeks.

The specialist seems to have given up and doesn't seem to understand what's happening.

My husband, Steve, has started using the 3 products you suggested - KoldKare, Monolauren and Collodial Drops, as well as the Can-C eyedrops about one and half weeks ago but has had 2 really bad episodes about a week of starting the regime (this makes him want to stop the regime as he thinks it's not working). I've said it'll take more time for these products to start working - am I right?

I'd be so grateful for your input as we're running out of ideas.

      Many thanks
      Julie

    4. Hi Julie
I really empathize with your husband's experience. It's a horrible, debilitating condition. All I can share is my own experience. I'm not a doctor or naturopath, but this path worked for me. I'm still problem free. I believe it was about a month after I started the regime that the episodes stopped. I'd recommend getting the opinion of a naturopathic doctor or nutritionist. Western medicine can did nothing for me other than dull the pain with heavy drugs.
      Best of luck to you
      Johanna

  17. Thank you so much for this info!!! I have a newly recurrent erosion that would re-open every few days despite putting traditional drops in every 30-60 minutes and being extremely careful with my eye. After trying almost every drop on the market, I finally found a product that has helped tremendously. It's been two weeks with no recurrence!!!! Allergan Refresh Celluvisc lubricant eye gel. It comes in a traditional bottle or in single use vials. I found the best price at WalMart at $12 for 30 count box. They are thicker than traditional drops and provide a protective layer to help lid glide over eye, and they feel refreshing and soothing. I hope this can help some of you!

    1. Hello Sajid

I have been suffering from recurrent corneal erosion since September 2013 after inadvertently scrapping my right eye with a rough towel while drying my hair. My eye is slightly red almost every day. I also had experienced excruciatingly painful episodes accompanied by swelling and redness every three months.

Two months ago, the doctor advised me to take a fish oil pill, beta-carotene pill, and Vitamin C pill every day. I notice that my eye will become worse after consuming nuts, cakes, chocolate, or creamer.

I teach college and do a lot of research every day, so I have to be patient with, and accepting of, my condition every waking minute.

  19. I have had this for about 6 yrs. Started out as superficial scratches and then 2 back to back full blown scratches that sent me into a tail spin. Never have I had so much pain. I was laid up for 3 days each time . I went to 3 optometrists, 3 ophthalmologists and 1 cornea specialist. They all said MURO 128 OINTMENT when you go to bed. You pull the bottom part of
your eye out , then outline that entire space there with a good helping of the ointment . You HAVE to roll your eyes around while closed ( firgure 8 & back and forth) to coat the entire eye . It works amazing!!! I want to try the hyperbaric oxygen therapy but I'm so afraid to go without the Muro 128 ointment and have the scratch happen. It has to be the worst feeling in the world. Please keep the blog going as there has to be something easier and permanent some day!

Eye specialist and corneal specialist has been telling me I might need surgery...I have been on Muro 128 but not feeling much better. Anyways...today I went to a naturopath and I was suggested to use Colloidal Silver drops in the eyes . Came home and even just 1 drop in each eye made me feel better and honestly I am better than I've been for 5 month! thank you for this wonderful blog. I hope I can report some good news. He mentioned that he has had success with a new treatment of Prokera membranes (basically a contact made out of amniotic fluid and placenta from consenting mothers who have babies via csection). Supposedly I strengthens the tissue and supports a stronger cornea. Anyone heard of this or have experience with it.

I travel a lot for work and can't risk having an episode as it would put me out for a day or two. One thing I have yet to read is what else is being done for bed. I know for me, it is the worst upon sleep/waking up due to dryness and friction from REM sleep...tearing in the mornings without use of contact lense in place. Muro 128 does nothing, nor does an eye bandaid stay in place to keep lid shut while using it. Anything further info would be helpful!

P.s. Pushed off my PTK surgery for another several months from now to see if I can cure naturally with diet alteration and ingestion of Kold Kare/ Monolaurin/Coloidal drops.

  32. Many thanks for this blog, give me many information on RCE. I work in Jakarta office with quite cold AC, 5 days per week. Nov last year, after working hours I felt my eyes were very dry and itchy, and I scratched my right eye. When I woke up next morning I felt something inside my eye. Painful and my eye got red. I visited a doctor and diagnosed as corneal erosion. I got soft lens for 2/3 days and finally healed. but then, in May 2016 I experienced the same thing. The doctor said it was RCE, this time he only cover my eye with bandage after giving ointment, for 1 day. Healed, but I think the treatment was not enough. June 2016 I got the 3rd RCE, visited other doctor and she treated me with soft lens for 1 week and antibiotic drop. In the same month, I got the 4th. I went to another doctor which was available in the same hospital. this time, the softlens was for 2 weeks. I got additional antibiotic, oral doxycycline 100mg twice daily. And eye drop every hour. Since the 4th experience and after reading a lot of information, I drink many food supplement/vitamin such as Lutena from Japan (good for eye), vit C, Fish Oil Omega 3, Sambiloto (Andrographis paniculata). Now after soft lens was removed, the doctor gave me Oculenta ophthalmic gel, 4 time a day including 1 before sleep. This has to be done for the next 1 year. What I learned in the internet, retaine mgd ophthalmic emulsion is a good one for dry eyes. I am trying to get this.

    1. What do you do for eye before bed? I'm currently utilizing a soft contact every night, but go without one all day. During say I'm fine and have to apply preservative free drops occasionally, but once I go to bed I know the next morning I will definitely have a tear without protection..(REM during sleep, A/C, sleep mask falling off...etc).

I may look into the Retaine MGD next.

  33. I gave my eye 1 drop of occulenta ophtalmic gel before bed. It works for 2 weeks when i was travelling to Paris and Italy. But 2 days after back to work, i got RCE again. This time doctor gave me softlens bandage for 1 week, and he recommended me to take PTK surgery.

  34. I just got diagnosed with RCE today. I have had 3 episodes the third being the worst. It is in my left eye and is super irritating and slightly painful. I woke this a.m. and thought I poked my eye or something and the blurred vision sent me in..its like looking through a raindrop...I am going to try this regimen but take coconut oil for the fatty acids instead. Oh I hope this goes away. I am going to the health store to pick up andrographis and I have the colloidal silver eye drops..what do you use at night to prevent? Thinking I will use coconut oil but wondering how long it will last..I eat pretty healthy but am going to tweak it a bit. I also don't remember any eye injuries..thank you all

    1. See if you can get a bandage contact lense for it to heal. Then try the above described by Joanna. Thus far, I feel fine with some slight irritations coming and going, but no tear for about a month at this point. Really got my diet in check with what she suggested for now and will try to go strong with that for 6 months or so. Then slowly start to introduce things to trial what my body dislikes.

  35. Thank you all for all of your comments and suggestions. I have had this now for 3 years. My vision started going bad right after I had my last baby and shortly after the tearing began. It's bad enough now it is almost daily and leaving scars that is blocking my vision. Msm drops and supplements help a lot if used religiously but I think I have the infection in my sinuses problem also. I have only had my eyes not bother me while I was on a very, very strong antibiotic for mrsa. This gives me some hope that I can find a cure. Thank You!

  42. Hello! I have been dealing with RCE for years and am happy to have stumbled upon this blog. I was told about PTK surgery as a fix, but no one has ever told me about any diet or supplement changes I could try. I was just wondering if there was any feedback on it as this post is years old. Is it still working for anyone who has tried it? I am so scared to stop my regimen and it would be very hard for me to stop my Muro ointment at night, but I am desperate and willing to try other things before this surgery. Any feedback is greatly appreciated!!

    1. Hi KatMom,

Do you have any other sympotoms? Have your thyroid levels been tested? My doctors were stumped but as it turned out my erosions were a system of my bigger autoimmune issue.

  43. I've had RCES for more than 15 years. It is only in the last 3 years that I have found the solution. I have another condition called pyroluria. It means that my body needs way more Vitamin B6 (as peroxidal 5 phosphate) and zinc than a normal person. I buy them from epigenetics. I have gone from having attacks several times / week on the 7-9 pain scale to just the occasional twinge every few months around 1 on the pain scale (and I have had 2 babies and breastfed in this time, which obviously has been draining my nutrients). I can't stress enough how life changing this has been for me. I highly recommend that anyone with RCES gets themselves tested for pyroluria and seeing if this is an underlying cause.
